Hawaii Pacific Unviersity (ハワイパシフィック大学)

Communication Major
(コミュニケーション学専攻)

Hawaii Pacific Univesity - Communication (コミュニケーション学)

Increasing emphasis on communication has created hundreds of new career fields in communication worldwide. Not only does communication study prepare students for hundreds of career fields, but it also equips them with excellent communication skills that are essential to success in any endeavor. Concentrated study is available at HPU in speech and visual communication.

Concentrated Speech

Program rational and objectives

The forerunner of the other communication disciplines, public speaking was studied as early as *. Success in any human enterprise is dependent upon our ability to organize our thoughts and articulate them effectively. Speech students will be able to research a topic thoroughly and document their sources. They will demonstrate an ability to dynamically express their ideas in structured presentations using visuals, and inflection, to stress important points.

Program Objectives for Speech

  • Students will understand the theories which support effective persuasive, interpersonal, group, and organizational st1:PersonName>communication and be able to apply them in diverse speaking situations. (This objective is the focus of COM 2000-Public Speaking, the introductory course of the program.)

  • Students will work as an individual, or as a member of a team, to use techniques and develop skills in defining research problems, conduct primary and secondary research, analyze and evaluate data, and present their findings. (All courses in the speech curriculum stress research, and the credibility inherent in supporting verbal assertions and claims.)

  • Students will develop, and be able to express a reflective understanding of, the social, cultural, and economic effects of communication at local, regional, national, and international levels and of the diverse expectations of different media, cultures, and social communities as these affect communication. (COM 3440-Advanced Public Speaking and COM 3640-Argumentation and Debate emphasize this objective.)

  • Students will demonstrate dynamic, effective, and persuasive oral communication skills. (This objective is developed throughout the program of study.)

  • Students will understand and be able to describe the philosophical foundations of ethics and the relationship of ethics, law, and cultural orientation in communication practice locally and internationally and to identify personal ethical norms and develop analytical techniques for the resolution of ethical considerations in particular situations. (COM 3440-Advanced Public Speaking and COM 3640-Argumentation and Debate emphasize this objective.)

  • Students will develop and integrate communication skills and knowledge necessary to function successfully as communicators in any context or media or to pursue graduate study and to demonstrate successful application of these skills in the production of a variety of written and oral communication. (COM 3440-Advanced Public Speaking and COM 3640-Argumentation and Debate emphasize this objective.)

Concentrated Visual Communication

Program rational and objectives

According to research, more information is communicated visually today than at any time in history. Visual messages are carried on posters, brochures, television, in movies, and on signage. Careers in this emerging field include videography, photography, video gaming, scriptwriting, multimedia, and graphic design. Students will develop a knowledge of the effects of color and shape on messages and the production of visual media including desktop publishing and video.

Program Objectives for Visual Communication

  • Students will acquire a knowledge of the technological development and history of electronic media. (This objective will be most apparent in Com 3060 Introduction to Broadcasting.)
  • Students will acquire the technical skills of production.  (This objective will be achieved through video production courses including COM 3465-Video Production I, COM 3560- Video Production II, and COM 4900-Seminar in Visual Communication.)
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the skill of communicating to mass audiences over the airways and via new media.  (This objective is emphasized in COM 3360-Writing for Broadcast, the three video production courses, and COM 3803-Web Design)
  • Students will develop an understanding of the influence of electronic media and the ethical responsibility of media practitioners.  (This objective is emphasized throughout all courses in the discipline.)
  • Students will gain skills in creating messages exclusively for computer and emerging technologies.  (This objective will be met through the web design course, COM 3803.)
